About the Artist

Anuschka Schiess is a Swiss-Caribbean Visual Artist whose practice centres on large-scale painting in acrylic and oil.

She grew up between two worlds — the Alpine landscapes of Appenzell, where her father's life was rooted in craft, tradition, and quiet precision; and the island of Aruba, where vibrancy, freedom, and an elemental joy of living defined everything. Rather than choosing between them, Schiess has spent her life learning to hold both — and to let that tension become the foundation of her art.

Shaped by fifteen years of professional ballet, her process is deeply intuitive and physical — she enters the work through movement, releasing energy through the body before a single mark is made. Rhythm, precision, the quiet tension between discipline and surrender — these were never ideas. They are real experiences. That she now continues to expand on canvas.

Each painting begins as a dialogue. Schiess listens to what the work asks of her, and responds — in colour, in gesture, in silence. She understands herself as a vessel through which something beyond the purely rational finds its form. Her compositions engage with consciousness, identity, and the invisible forces that shape collective human experience — opening a space in which the viewer is drawn into their own act of perception.

Schiess works from her studio in Appenzell, where each frame is crafted by hand together with her father — an independent carpenter. A collaboration that extends her commitment to material integrity beyond the canvas.

«My work is about rhythm, presence, and the dialogue between instinct and structure.» — Anuschka Schiess

Exhibitions

2025 March - Zurich Erlenbach

Chaos & Structure maps the tension between disorder and order — not as opposing forces, but as a continuous, living dialogue. Born from lived polarity — between Switzerland and the Caribbean, between societal expectation and intrinsic truth — the works explore what it means to navigate opposing worlds and find the courage to follow one's own way.

The paintings do not resolve the tension between opposites. They inhabit it. Each composition feels less like a finished statement and more like a moment caught mid-movement — chaos reaching toward structure, structure yielding back to chaos.

Rooted in the artist's twenties, the exhibition proposes that both sides of every polarity are necessary. Not to choose between them, but to move through them — until, perhaps, a centre emerges.

Debuted March 2025, Zurich.

2026 April, Construction project SHIFT, Zurich Switzerland

SHIFT marks Anuschka Schiess's first public art commission — and a new chapter in her practice. Initiated by Zürcher Kantonalbank, what began as an idea is now part of Zurich's urban fabric, installed on the former Electrolux building at Badenerstrasse 587, visible directly opposite the Kappeli tram station.

Created for a space in transition — a place becoming both home and workplace, both structure and freedom — SHIFT lives precisely in that in-between. It is a visual translation of potential: of what a place can hold, and what it might become. Where architecture meets openness, and where the familiar begins to shift into something new.

On view for one year. Badenerstrasse 587, 8048 Zürich — commissioned by Zürcher Kantonalbank.

May 2026, Artist Residency — Villa Lena Foundation, Tuscany

The Villa Lena Foundation supports international contemporary artists through residency and multidisciplinary exchange. Set on a 19th-century estate in the heart of Tuscany — rolling hills, dense woodland, deliberate distance from the world — it is a place where time slows and creative focus deepens.

In May 2026, Schiess spent four weeks at Villa Lena, surrendering to the rhythms of Mediterranean life. She embraced a rare depth of introspection — weeks of near-total stillness in continuous, uninterrupted dialogue with herself and her practice. The experience brought an expansion of consciousness and a deeper connection to her artistic being. The exchange with fellow international artists proved equally formative.

During her residency she created a small series of paintings reflecting the lightness of Tuscan life — earthy ochres, terracottas, and dusty greens that pushed her beyond familiar colour territories and expanded her visual language in ways that continue to shape her work.
